Mike Slocombe and Spencer Weekes' ultra collectable People vinyl
releases have been pointing the way forward for dance music for the
last three and a half years. Unlike most labels, which burrow into
easily identified markets, People has reached across the genre
boundaries of dance - becoming a by-word for quality, diversity and
exhibiting a sense of history while facing the future.

Now, for the first time, the precious vinyl gems are being released
to a wider audience on CD.

As a whole the compilation demonstrates why a crop of underground
UK producers and musicians returned to four-four house and
re-evaluated break beat at the end of the Nineties.

Rejecting the formulaic uber-culture of commercial dance music in
all its forms, they returned to the Latin and African roots of
dance while deriving inspiration from the disco, funk, hip hop and
early house movements of the Seventies and Eighties. It's this mood
that People have tapped into so effectively.

Unit 4's 'Don't Go' provides the perfect introduction to the themes
that run through this sublime album. Excess instrumentation is
gutted to leave the bare emotion-pulling essential elements - the
mastery is in the attention to subtle detail

Electric Soul contribute two tracks to the album. A collaboration
between celebrated West London house innovator, Phil Asher, and
Luke McCarthy, their 'Je Me Souviens' combines four four beat with
a Beedle-esque deep, rolling dub bass line and percussive rolls,
while 'A New Song', on CD2, is a Latin house fest.

New Sector Movements' 'My History (Afro History PT.2)' is a
definitive moment on the album, exhibiting the roots of dance music
in the UK in the eclectic dance floors of the Eighties. African
percussion is augmented by Tania Maria vocals, piano lines and
     urban spoken word samples.

Misa Negra's 'Spiritual Vibe' is the first track on the album to
break the deep house vibe, allowing the first Likwid Biskit track,
the P Funk party meets stripped back hip hop of 'The All New Ummm
PT.4', to kick in the break beats proper.

The second NSM track to be included, 'Futuristic Dancer', is a
     vibe-filled funk jazz classic, while I.G Culture's Likwid Biskit's
superb electro-funk confusion 'Find Peace Within' keeps the flow
     while detonating pre-conceived rhythm patterns.

The end of the first set (and it really does play like a set)
returns to the four four equilibrium with Everyday People's 'All
Night', washing the beats in soaring strings, minimal jazz chords
     and piano runs.

CD 2 locks down into 2step territory with KVS, featuring Nicky
Taylor,'s 'Church Candles' while Likwid Bisket's 'Complete Worries'
keeps the swing going while adding jazz dance vocals. Ian O'Brien
continues to mess with off beats but strip everything down to a
syncopated hard funk groove that's as mesmerising as it is
disconcerting. Likwid Biskit's 'Sound Orgy' soars into space jazz
before NSM restore the Latin mood with 'Voonga Voonge'. Soul
Tuition's 'Bring Me Down' ripples with vibes and the SK Radicals'
'Reachin' 4 Da Farside (Misa Negra mix)', which on other mixes
could bounce the party back into action, is used to close the
     chapter.

Inevitably some of this is a trip down memory lane. But it's hard
to think of a better lane to be in. --dotmusic.com
