In recent years, Pocahaunted have been one of the
most active groups on the US improv/psych scene,
releasing countless cassettes and other such ephemera,
but seeing a proper CD album release by them is something
of a novelty.
Island Diamonds apparently took three months to make,
which surely renders this one of the more intensively crafted
records in the band's discography.
It's also one of the strangest. Metal drummer Bobb Bruno weigs
in with electronic drums and Raccoo-oo-oon's Andy Spore
provides sax, bolstering up an album that reconfigures
Bethany and Amanda's folksy, spiritual noise transgressions
of old into something approaching conventional structure.
In fact, the clattering, ramshackle reggae of 'Ghetto Ballet' and
'Riddim Queen' are fairly explicit in their allegiance with grimy,
slow grooving dub. Most unexpected, and very very good.
