| | The story of jungle... | |
| | | |
| | The music of a new generation conquers | |
| | European dancefloors: jungle. Jungle has less | |
| | to do with rain forests but refers to the | |
| | "jungle" of metropolitan London where this | |
| | "hardcore" offshoot emerged on the streets. | |
| | Whilst the poorer mainly black quarters of | |
| | New York have produced hip hop, jungle | |
| | reflects the frustrations and aggressions of | |
| | London's young urban population. "It's | |
| | entertainment and fun for those who do not | |
| | have to expect too much of life." as an | |
| | insider puts it. Rebel MC already | |
| | experimented in 1990 with what dominates the | |
| | scene as Jungle today. But it was only in | |
| | 1994 that the real breakthrough came with the | |
| | Nottinghill Carnaval. Shortly after the | |
| | carnaval Jungle tracks were heard on radio | |
| | for the first time and M-Beat & General Levy | |
| | entered the UK Charts with "Incredible" - one | |
| | of the scene's hymns as well as Shy FX & UK | |
| | Apache's "Original Nuttah". | |
| | | |
| | But what is Jungle? It may be discribed as a | |
| | DJ mix using high speed hardcore house/techno | |
| | breakbeats as a frame and hanging jazz, | |
| | ambient, ragga chat and soul vocals as well | |
| | as piercing sound effects all over them. | |
| | Concerned observers at first criticized | |
| | jungle as "Gangsta Rave" and "Dark Beat", | |
| | however, the most remarkable fact regarding | |
| | this new underground sound is the great | |
| | integrational factor: techno freaks and ragga | |
| | fans, black and white unite for a mega-rave. | |
| | The outfit of the true junglist varies from | |
| | white gloves and bomber jacket to dreadlocks | |
| | and designer clothes. Jungle music burns on a | |
| | creative level of its own, a boiling pot of | |
| | wildest ideas and styles with its uncrowned | |
| | heroes: Jumpin' Jack Frost, Shy FX, General | |
| | Levy, Leviticus (Yes, JJ Frost again - ed.), | |
| | Nicky Blackmarket a.o. However, in the | |
| | meantime major labels and artists have become | |
| | aware of jungle and are producing special | |
| | jungle mixes, e.g. Baby D, Dawn Penn etc. | |
| | | |
| | Jungle is the most earth-shaking | |
| | music of the moment. | |
