Inland Knights comprises of Laurence Ritchie and Andy Riley.
Whilst at college in '89 Laurence discovered the pleasures of
acid house parties, as these parties progressed into Raves
Laurence turned to the free party scene as a way to escape the
corporate clutches of clubbing. The enjoyment people were having
from the no frills attitude of free parties spurred Laurence
(then as a d j) and friends into starting Smokescreen based in
Sheffield 91, a collective of like minded people who would set up
their sound system in woodlandÆs and many other sites surrounding
Sheffield and the midlands.
As SmokescreenÆs reputation grew, known for their uncompromising
deep house soundtrack so the size of the parties swelled as did
their frequency-booming in 94Æ with Smokescreen putting on a
party each week . For a year Forging links with similar
collectives around the Midlands Smokescreen relocated to
Nottingham '96, where the parties continued until the sound
system was seized by the Police in '99. Not before Smokescreen
had managed to squeeze in a European tour! .
Laurence had met Andy Riley, also a DJ , over the years at
various parties. Andy was already recording as Toka Project with
Steve Walker and had built up the To-ka studio with another
friend Jason Cowley , Andy was to become a core member of
smokescreen in '96. Laurence was no stranger to a studio himself
and in '98 he joined forces with the to-ka studio with the aim of
starting Drop , it wasn't long before Laurence and Andy were
writing mostly together , and 'Inland Knights' was formed for the
first Drop release.
Intergroove Distribution signed Drop Music late in '98Æ and
guided the fledgling label through their formulative releases, as
the label grew so did LaurenceÆs knowledge of the industry and
how to run a label. Drop Music has grown from strength to
strength with each release and as Inland Knights Laurence and
Andy have not looked back. Their collaborations under the Inland
Knights guise have found them favour with a number of top DJÆs
and labels, with 20/20 Vision and Panhandle Records signing EP's.
From them. D.I.Y and Siesta are also enlisting their production
talents for future projects.
Djing has taken them far and wide with a tour of South Africa in
99+00 an american tour and regular dates across England. Drop
Music is known by a variety of djÆs as a label to look out for
because of the quality of music and the consistency of releases.
Almost all Drop releases have four trackÆs, one of which will
find itÆs way into a techno, house or downtempo dj's set..
The Drop sound is carved from the years of running and Dj'ing on
the large dub system at hundreds of smokescreen parties, the bass
and beat have ground their way in to the dj's, and playing to
such a mixed crowd at hundreds of different venues, has
completely formed and forged the unique playing and writing
styles behind the label.

If you're down with the deep house music, music with feeling ...
music that makes you groove no matter where you are ... and you
keep the feeling. dh 2001
