   ' `
When Rasta poet Benjamin Zephaniah was shortlisted for a
fellowship at Cambridge University and later for Oxford
Professor of Poetry, 'The Sun' squealed "WOULD YOU LET YOUR
DAUGHTER NEAR THIS MAN?" Now he's frequently heard and seen
on TV and radio, and in early 1999 was being seriously
touted as the next Poet Laureate - even said by some to have
the dubious distinction of being Tony Blair's favorite
        choice.

Benjamin was born in 1958 in Black River, Jamaica (although
some biogs say Birmingham). At the age of two he came to
England, spending much of his early childhood on Fentham
Road, Lozells, Handsworth. He grew up in Handsworth with the
other nine children in his family, was expelled from
Broadway School for redecorating the school toilets, and got
into frequent trouble with police. At the age of fourteen he
was sent to borstal (reform school). Shortly after leaving
he was fitted up and served a two year prison sentence for a
        crime he never committed.

Released after nearly dying in prison of a lung infection,
in 1979 he moved to London, where he became active with the
thriving late 70's workers co-operative scene. He set up a
housing co-op and a bookshop. His first self-published
pamphlet of poems appeared, called "Pen Rhythm" (Page One
        Books).

Through the dancehall and sound system scene he became
involved in performance poetry. Articles then began to
appear about him in the New Musical Express and Black Beat
International, and a TV programme followed. In 1982, after
extensive gigging in the UK and on the continent, he
        released the album RASTA.

In 1983 and 1985 favorite alternative London magazine 'City
Limits' declared him 'Poet of the Year'.

In 1988 he was shortlisted for Oxford Professor of Poetry,
loosing to the future Nobel prize-winner Seamus Heaney.

Several TV documentaries followed. In 1990 someone "let
their daughter near this man", and he married.

In the last few years he has acted in BBC TV and radio
plays, performed much poetry at gigs and festivals and
charity events. BZ appears increasingly on radio and
television as performer and cultural commentator. He still
performs all his work from memory.

Among a variety of worthy causes, BZ is chairman of the
Hackney Empire Theatre, and a patron of the Andrew Lee Jones
Fund, which raises money to train new lawyers in capital
defence work, and to provide scholarships for law students
who want to work in the USA on behalf of those facing the
        death penalty.

In May 1998, BZ was appointed to a new government
"creativity task force" to advise on the place of music and
art in the National Curriculum, The National Advisory
Committee on Creative and Cultural Education. However, BZ,
Dawn French and Lenny Henry resigned in disgust before
publication. BZ claimed Education Secretary David Blunkett
        had interfered with the report.
