This debut album from Omni Trio could have been ever so slightly
better in places, but what it does right, it does very right, no
     doubts there.
Tune #1 is one of the highlights - a definite good start to the
track-listing. While it's not that mix of Renegade Snares, it is
the equally as much played, and better produced version that
everyone was dropping in late '94 once the earlier Foul Play mix
started to get tiresome. The beat programming in this one simply
pisses on the original (astonishingly), and the improved strings
marry perfectly with the classic piano line, which obviously
appears firmly in tact. Quite a hard bastard to mix with though,
strangely enough! Alex from Hyper-On Experience had a hand with
this one apparently - possibly the last HOE production of all-time?
Living For the Future is next, and while it has a nice
intelligent Bukem vibe and an incredibly mental warbling bassline,
it's not quite a classic. Features nice hard drums.
The best tune on the album comes straight in as we turn the wax
over, in a little something called Rollin' Heights. It too is a
remix like the previous two tracks, but this one undoubtedly beats
the original version hands down, which always missed a little spark
I thought. We have a full on vintage Omni Trio Amen roller here,
with the expected blend of gorgeous pianos and strings, topped with
screaming "baby!" vocals. Matey it's fucking slamming!
The '95 mix of Mainline checks in next. I hated this one at
first, but since seeking out a lot more intelligent work since the
early years when I originally bought this L.P., I've since grown a
lot fonder. Pure early jazzy drum 'n' bass with a happy summer
vibe, that I could oh so easily mistake for a Nookie record.
     Acquired listening, but superb.
Finally we get an original mix for a change after that, and
thankfully it's good old Thru the Vibe. The vocals, that piano
line, the crazy beats - it's all there, and it's never sounded
     better.
There's a massive waft of cheese as the second slab comes on.
Something called Together, once again using the full-on
piano/string/Amen combo, and it's starting to give the album a lack
of variation by this point sadly. I quite like this tune though -
the production is once again faultless, and I remember the crowd
being well up for it when Fabio dropped the bugger back in '94.
Oh matey, how good is the next one?? Fuck the Foul Play mixes
my friends, this is the real version of Renegade Snares! Why oh why
this wasn't so ludicrously hammered like the other mixes, I'll
never understand. It even beats the original version. More jazzy
beats and hard Amen loops are evident, naturally, as are the
strings and the pianos, but the way the vocal builds, and the beat
usage, it's all so very good. One of those tracks I'm genuinely
     proud to own.
We have another cheese-fest on the flip in Shadowplay. Yet even
more pianos start things off, and yes even more Amens are thrown at
us a minute later. The tune eventually goes slightly sadder in its
melodies as things progress though, and really becomes all the more
better as a result, plus that "Feel yeah...yeah!" drop in the
latter half always sends shivers down my spine I have to say. A
     guilty pleasure.
Alien Creed is a little different. Rob Haigh tries to give us
something more experimental and obscure here in the form of a slow
intelligent old skool hardcore-driven thing. Sadly he resorts to
more pianos and more strings which doesn't really push it towards
any sort of album boundaries, and ultimately instead ends up as yet
another tune just like all the others, only a wee bit slower.
Feel Good ends the album on a high - you all know this one I'm
sure. The '95 version would have been nice I think, I've always
loved that sodding tune, but it's just a personal preference which
I'm sure isn't shared by any of you.
Overall The Deepest Cut features some quality cuts no doubt,
which is a top way of beefing up your record collection and Omni
Trio back catalogue at the same time. He is after all, one of the
     longest and most
