"Frankie Paul has a voice that improves with each release and, although
initially compared with Dennis Brown, he has evolved a strange nasal,
throaty style that makes him sound much older. It's the sheer exuberance
of his best performances that give away his youthfulness, and his two
London appearances have been joyous occasions." - NME (4 May 1985)
Born in 1965 in Jamaica, Frankie Paul is the son of a singer. He was born
blind, and although a hospital shop gave him partial vision as a youth,
it was only recently that a New York eye specialist gave him extra strong
glasses to slightly improve his vision. He attended the Salvation Army
School for the blind and while he was there, the school was visited by Stevie
Wonder, who after singing on stage with Frankie, gave him a lot of encouragement.
As many people had seen him on stage during his school days, he progressed
naturally into recording in 1980, and at the age of fifteen the first tune
he recorded was 'African Princess.'
In 1983 Frankie Paul recorded some material for Channel One, which resulted
in two 'Showdown' LPs, the first with Sugar Minott (containing 'Worries In
The Dance') and the second with Little John. He sang the backing vocals on
both albums himself! He also plays most instruments, having learnt the piano
at school, and having taught himself guitar and drums.
In a short space of time Frankie has recorded with many different producers
including Prince Jammy, Junjo Lawes, and George Phang. Junjo Lawes produced
'Pass The Tu Sheng Peng' which was number one in the reggae charts for
several weeks in the summer of 1984.
After meeting David Rodigan in Jamaica, Frankie was brought to England in
the early eighties by Capital Radio, to play one night in Brixton; he returned
not long after for his first full tour of the UK.
