As well as producing vocal classics from such enduring
Jamaican stars as Dennis Brown, John Holt, the Heptones, Ken
Boothe, Delroy Wilson and Horace Andy - along with Al
Campbell's most consistent series of roots and lovers tunes
- the still under-celebrated Phil Pratt regularly voiced
deejays over his most popular rhythms. These included
outstanding records from not only the two foundation
deejays, U-Roy and Dennis Alcapone, but the best of those
two had emerged in their wake, including the very literate
I-Roy, the former Lord Tippertone toaster/chanter who
prompted the shift to 'conscious' lyrics, Big Youth, and the
most distinguished of his disciples, Dillinger. Like much of
Pratt's fine work in the studio these important recordings
were unavailable for many years - and much sought after by
collectors - before some were included in a couple of recent
compilations released by Jet Set - Raw Roots Volumes 1&2.
Nevertheless, the one man at the mike who recorded an entire
album worth of material for Phil Pratt was in danger of
being overlooked, even by reggae afficionados - until the
timely release of this set. Little is known about the
background of King Sighta, except that he was 24 in the late
1970's, when his only album appeared on Pratt's Terminal
label in Jamaica, under it's present title, and in slightly
variant form, as The One Eyed Giant, on Trojan in the UK.
And according to the liner notes of the original album, he
was living in Kingston when he gained his name after loosing
one of his eyes in an accident at the factory where he
worked. But a listen to the eight tracks collected here tell
us that he was a proficient journeyman deejay of the time -
with shades of more famous toasters such as Big Youth,
Trinity, Jah Woosh and Prince Far-I in his confident
delivery. We can safely assume that he had the best brought
out in him by Phil Pratt's tough roots rhythms, which sound
very much as if they were recorded at the Hookim brothers
very successful Channel One studio on Maxfield Avenue.
If the man known to us only as King Sighta made any records
for other producers, he must have done so under a different
name. But the chances are that after his brief shot at glory
with Phil Pratt he simply returned, as so many other
talented Jamaicans have, to the anonymity from which he came
- his potetial only partly fulfilled.
