AMG EXPERT REVIEW: The Mighty Diamonds spent the first half
of the '70s testing the waters, recording with various
Jamaican producers at a number of different studios.
Following initial efforts with Jah Lloyd, Stranger Cole, and
Derrick Harriott, the trio landed at Channel One, the studio
run by brothers Ernest and Joseph "Joe Joe" Hookim. The
bittersweet harmonies of singers Donald "Tabby" Shaw,
Fitzroy "Bunny" Shaw, and Lloyd "Judge" Ferguson floating
weightlessly above the rockers-style rhythms supplied by
Channel One's Revolutionaries proved a truly sublime
combination. From the beginning energy was focused on
singles, and as a result Right Time, the group's 1976 debut
(also released by Virgin in the U.K.), was essentially an
expanded hits package. Exceptional 45 sides were joined by
equally strong reality statements like "Why, Me Black
Brother," "Gnashing of Teeth," and "Go Seek Your Rights."
From Bunny and Judge's opening declaration, "Natty dread
will never run away" ("The Right Time") to "Africa," the
repatriation theme that closes the set, Right Time never
falters. "Why, Me Black Brother" denounced the sort of
violence that could flare up around Maxfield Avenue, home to
Channel One itself. Soaked in exquisite, minor key
harmonies, "Them Never Love," a plaint to Marcus Garvey, is
the equal of any number cut on the subject and "Natural
Natty" affirms the group's alliance with the dreads.
Everything else is of equal quality. Though the Mighty
Diamonds went on to record a series of fine albums into the
dancehall era, they never topped this majestic debut. ù
