When it comes to live albums, reggae is sorely lacking. Bob
Marley And The Wailers Live! and Babylon By Bus (also by
Marley & co.) are, of course. notable exceptions. But these
notwithstanding. there's just not much out there in the way
of live recordings to cherish or - for that matter - to
choose from. However, with the release of Black Uhuru's Tear
It Up - Live. there is finally a new reggae album that
measures up to Marley's live efforts and markedly captures
the intensity and excitement of the music form. Recorded
during the Jamaican trio's 1981 European tour, the album
generates a heap of Rasta-inspired riddims with unflinching
execution. And rarely has Black Uhuru's raw, mesmerizing
power been so direct and convincing. Led, as usual, by the
monopolizing percussive team of Robbie Shakespeare on bass
and Sly Dunbar on drums, all eight tracks sparkle with
uptempo action and a surefire groove. All of Black Uhuru's
top tunes are included in the collection save the biting
"Youths Of Eglington" off the Red LP. Striking versions of
"Shine Eye Gal," "General Penitentiary," and "Guess Who's
Coming To Dinner" appear and reveal lead singer Michael Rose
as an intimidating, altogether engrossing vocalist who
leaves few stones unturned. Tear It Up - Live represents
Black Uhuru in peak form. The album is further proof that
Rose. Duckie Simpson, and Puma Jones may be the most
important reggae trio of the 1980s.
