Any one who listens to reggae should have this classic album ...

      From AMG (allmusic.com):
This outstanding vocal trio has been hailed as
prophetic visionaries and since their inception in the
mid-'70s, Culture has been an influential group,
calling Jamaica's poor to rise up in peace and fight
against oppression. At the center of Culture is chief
songwriter and leader Joseph Hill, who started out
his career as a solo singer and guitarist. On stage, he
is the fiery one, energetic and charismatic while
Albert Walker and Roy "Kenneth" Dayes are ice
      cool and steady.

They came together in 1976 in St. Catherine's Parish
where Hill was born and raised. Hill, along with
cousins Albert Walker and Roy Sylvester Dayes
formed their first group, the African Disciples, the
same year. Dayes adopted the name Kenneth to
honor his old friend Kenneth Richards. Shortly after
they formed, the trio came to the attention of producer Joe Gibbs who invited
them to audition at his studio. The Disciples sang several songs for Gibbs, most
of them written by Hill, who had begun composing tunes at age 14. It was a
powerful session and Gibbs grabbed the songs without signing the group to a
contract and set the naive threesome to recording. Some of the songs they sang
at the audition included "Get Ready to Ride the Lion to Zion," "Two Sevens
Clash," and "Calling Rasta for I," songs which would appear on their first two
albums along with "Baldhead Bridge" and "Love Shines Brighter." Eventually
they left Gibbs. Their first album, Two Sevens Clash came out the following
year. The recording session featured such artists as Sly Dunbar, Robbie
Shakespeare, Bingy Bunny, Bobby Marquis, and others. It was Bingy Bunny and
Blacka Morewell who suggested the Disciples change their name to Culture. The
album, released during a time when reggae music was at a crossroads, is credited
for having helped to guide the genre towards new directions and for Culture that
direction was to spread a more aggressive political message. An excellent
example of their political bent can be heard on the title track of their 1982
Heartbeat album, Lion Rock, a powerful call to African Jamaicans to throw of the
cultural chains placed upon them by the Anglo colonialists. But while considered
militant, Culture does not advocate violence as means of enacting change. Like
many Rastafarians, they promote the use of ganja, but find other, harder drugs
such as cocaine destructive, not only to users, but society as a whole. As chief
songwriter, Hill is inspired by many things from current political events to the
sounds of nature when he is out in the country meditating. The music of others
also moves him, and Hill has rather eclectic taste ranging from reggae to
American country music. Throughout their long, distinguished careers, Culture
has gone on to influence and work with many of reggae's greats. -- Sandra
      Brennan
