Luke Gordon is a man who has been working at the pointy end of the
æMusic With No NameÆ since the early Nineties, having made his mark
with two classic albums and a host of 12"s. As well as his own
creations, Luke played a pivotal role at the notorious Milo
Studios, engineering for the likes of DJ Krush, Major Force,
U.N.K.L.E. and most importantly Howie B. "Howieæs been a big
influence on me and is one of the most inspiring people I know.
HeÆll get really excited about a project and thatÆll get me going."
With albums æAtlas EarthÆ and æSensory ManÆ under his belt, both of
which were ground-breaking explorations into chilled electronica,
jazz and live orchestration, and his epochal track æContrazoomÆ
with soul siren Alison Goldfrapp, Luke was ready for a change.
"With this album I wanted to move away from the extreme
experimentation of æSensory ManÆ, and head towards the dancefloor
without losing any of the musicality".
The epic dance floor beats of The Beamer herald a more mature,
polished Spacer, which still appeals to the home listener. This
sleek new sound is a melding of house, techno, dub, jazz and
orchestrated strings and brass.
"I wanted to make an album that I could play in clubs," smiles
Luke. "In a lot of ways itÆs come from my development as a DJ,
since IÆve started playing out more itÆs becoming one of the
biggest buzzes for me, different, but equally as fulfilling as
playing live."
Luke had a DJing epiphany during a perfect set in Reykjavik; "IÆd
flown out to Iceland to mix an album, and there were a couple of
opportunities to play out. The Icelandic crowd were mental, it was
the best reception IÆve ever had."
The addition of LukeÆs 21 month old daughter to the family has also
helped provide a new focus; "I used to take music so seriously,
that IÆd get really worked up if something wasnÆt going right. I
just take little breaks, playing with Thalia." He smiles. "SheÆs
helped me relax."
However getting started on The Beamer was difficult; "I have to put
myself in a situation where I get creatively inspired to get
cracking." Whilst kicking around his studio for inspiration, Luke
decided to pack up the van with his wife and daughter and drive
down to Dordogne in the south of France.
Luke was joined by regular collaborators Tim Weller on drums, Ian
Simmonds AKA Juryman playing bass, and childhood friend Max Moore
on keyboards. There was even room for some local collaboration;
"There was this old guy who lived down the road who came and played
violin on the beginning of æHoustonÆ. He also supplied us with lots
of weed!".
"It was really hot that summer, so we had all the windows open and
weÆd turn up the tune and go outside and knock a football about,
mulling over what to do next. YouÆd hear the snare drums echoing
off around the valley."
Back to London, and many feverish weeks in the studio later, The
Beamer arrived at Pussyfoot HQ fully formed. SpacerÆs strongest and
most accessible work yet, The Beamer looks set to light up 2001.
