Junior Murvin has yet to match the success of his
chart-topping 1976 hit, "Police & Thieves." Produced by Lee
Perry, the song became the anthem of the Notting Hill
Carnaval in 1977 and was subsequently covered by the Clash
and Boy George. Although he recorded a number of other
reggae hits, including "Cool Out Son," "Miss Kushie," "Bad
Man Posse," and "Muggers in the Street," none have achieved
the sales of "Police & Thieves."
A native of Port Antonio, Jamaica, Murvin was gifted with a
uniquely high falsetto. In a review of a late '70s concert,
a writer for www.reggaeexpress.com wrote, "I was mesmerized
by his voice and you could have knocked me over with an
eyelash." Murvin's musical career began at a very slow pace.
Having established his reputation in the late '60s with his
soulful interpretations of Curtis Mayfield songs, he teamed
with producers Sonia Pottinger and Derrick Harriott to
record Mayfield's tunes "People Get Ready" and "Closer
Together" under the moniker Junior Soul. Although his 1972
rendition of the traditional Jamaican air, "Solomon," was a
local hit, he became disappointed when it failed to reach an
international audience. Retreating to his home in the
Jamaican hills, he taught himself to play guitar and worked
on improving his songwriting skills. Re-emerging in 1976,
Murvin hooked up with Lee Perry and began recording at
Perry's Black Ark studio in Kingston. It took only weeks
before "Police & Thieves" had provided with the hit that he
sought. The recording, however, was Murvin's last
collaboration with Perry, who was on the verge of a nervous
breakdown. Although he continued to work with such producers
as Joe Gibbs, Mikey Dread, Henry "Junjo" Lawes, and Prince
Jammy, it appeared that Murvin's 15 minutes of fame had
passed.
