A year or so ago I remember speaking with a white friend
about Louis Farrakhan. In general, most of the white folks I
talk to can't stand the man and don't see any positive
qualities about him. However, this friend said, "Well, maybe
in order to make things in this world more even, we need
people like Farrakhan at the extreme end to balance things
out." She was right -- even if you don't like what Farrakhan
says and you're offended by it, the fact that the black race
is still treated like second-class citizens way too often
should be enough to accept "extremist" leaders (as some
refer to the NOI).
I think the same holds true for artists like Lady Saw. She
is not afraid to speak slackness and she is a dominating
woman in appearance (shaved head, wearing leather, and
holding a whip on her latest album). A lot of roots fans
can't stand DJs that come on the sex tip, especially those
who speak as blatently as Lady Saw (songs on her latest
include "Good Wuk," "Life Without Dick," and "Condom"), but
the fact is that she really comes correct on songs like
"What is Slackness." She identifies slackness as corrupt
politicians.
And while she certainly does come hard-edged on several
tracks, on "Give Me the Reason," she kicks back and sings
some sweet vocals over a violin-laced riddim. Three songs
deep into the album, Lady Saw makes it clear she means
business -- whether it's discussing sex, pulling down
politicians from their pedistals, or singing with Chevelle
Franklyn on a chill riddim.
Which brings me 360 back to my point. Lady Saw may seem to
be the extreme Queen of Slackness lyrics, but much like
Farrakhan or rapper Paris' adoption of G-Funk on his latest
album, it is clear she's using her hard image to pull the
listeners she needs most and then drops the bomb on them
with intelligent lyrics (and occasionally
not-as-intelligent: "Men say the darnest things / When they
want to tear down yu walls"). Pay attention -- don't pass it
off too quickly, this young lady is taking charge.
