It's always been true that there's nothing quite like a good
reggae concert, where music takes on even more impact and
meaning placed in a live setting in front of an
enthusiastic, tuned-in crowd. This document captures an
October show from California on Israel Vibrations' tour of
the States last fall, and (though it will clearly take
months of home-testing and listening to confirm such a hasty
claim) Vibes Alive! could well be one of the best four or
five live reggae albums ever assembled. Though, admittedly,
it takes them a song or two to really lock in, once they're
in on that telepathic performing wavelength, the results are
actually among the greatest moments in the Vibration's
extensive catalogue. For 75 minutes we're held captive by
three superb singers trading off lead vocal chores.
Instrumentally, the Roots Radics Band once again proves
their pedigree; while they're most often thought of as a
studio outfit, here they fill the stage nobly, providing
more than just a backup by giving each song a feeling that's
distinctly soulful. Easy on the programming, heavy on the
grooves, the Band's undeniable musicianship shows through on
each and every cut (check out Flabba Holt's thunderous
basslines on "Vultures," with the acoustics of the hall
themselves providing for heavy dub atmospherics). Even
Israel Vibrations' more modern-sounding material ("Reggae On
The River") gets a classic treatment, making Vibes Alive!
one of the most powerful and just plain timeless reggae
records in recent memory.
