Mike Brooks est un artiste de reggae mΘconnu qui, par manque
de succΦs, fut contraint d'Θmigrer en Angleterre dans les
annΘes 80. Pourtant, son chant percutant dans un style
proche d'un Rod Taylor aux inflexions soul voire gospel n'a
rien α envier aux plus grands, comme le prouve ces quelques
titres compilΘs sur ce CD.
NΘ en 1953 en Jama∩que, ses dΘbuts discographiques au sein
des Tots en 1972 sont loin du succΦs escomptΘ et c'est tout
naturellement que le groupe se dissout, permettant α Mike
Brooks de voler de ses propres ailes. A partir de 1977 il
signe quelques hits bien aidΘ en cela par son producteur
Alvin Ranglin et travaillera par la suite avec bon nombre de
musiciens du terroir.
Regroupant certains de ses meilleurs morceaux enregistrΘs
entre 1975 et 1984 ainsi que ceux d'autres artistes, les
Mighty diamonds, Jah Lion, Pat Kelly, Roots Radics, cette
compilation nous fait dΘcouvrir ses talents de chanteur
comme sur les tonitruants Time is the master (1976), Rhum
drinker (1975), Who have eyes to see (1978), duo avec le DJ
Prince Far I , les superbes ballades Feeling of reggae,
Woman of shiloh (1979), le sautillant Chere up (1984),
l'Θmotionnel Me and my father a spar (1984) clamΘ par le
charismatique DJ Denis Al Capone ou encore Hoo hoo natty
dread α la rythmique implacable ; parmi ses invitΘs notons
la prΘsence du chanteur Gladstone Anderson accompagnΘ des
Roots Radics sur l'envo√tant Hollymont zion ou sa voie
sensuelle et irrΘelle est du plus bel effet.
Une bien belle compilation, tΘmoignage d'un temps ou le
reggae n'avait pas encore α subir les assauts pervers de
boites α rythmes et autres synthΘtiseurs. Du roots reggae
comme on l'aime, α mille lieues du digital et du dance-hall
et qui saura contenter tout amateur du genre.
