Tony Roots is the last sensation in the english roots scene
of the new millenium, on the way of artistes came out in the
early nineties like Tena Stelin and Danny Red.
The Tony's popularity has been consolidated trough the last
two years with several good singles released by Reggae On
Top and Jah Warrior. Now this second album is a confirmation
of the happy moment reached by Tony Roots, after the
previous "Not Far Away" (produced by Barry Isaacs' Reggae On
Top, one of the best roots album in UK the last year).
"Sufferer's cry" is the result of the accurate production
work made by Anthony Affum-Appea with his young label Roots
Hiteck.
Anthony worked with three different studios to supply a well
matched set of rhythms for Tony Roots; Russ Disciples and
Jonha Dan given the majority of tracks, like the wonderful
title track and the well know "meditation rock" rhythm (used
for "Rasta Chant"). Robert Tribulation with his Word Sound
And Power studio supplied the most infectious rhythm, the
stepper of "Reggae Song", made more involving yet by the
irresistible Tony Roots singing. The glorious Ruff Cutt crew
made the major-key rhythms with a more "dancehall" flavour
like "Mr Fraud", and "Lamb And Lion".
The result is a pleasing english reggae synthesis, a lot
inspired by the classic roots tradition but with modern
sounds: a style that characterise all the Roots Hiteck
productions. After a serie of 7" singles, Roots Hiteck found
in Tony Roots the right artist for the first album of his
catalogue.
Tony Roots is resolutely an high level artist. Before his
arrival in England, Tony has born and raised in Jamaica, in
the Mandeville region. His voice has an original mark, and
his style is well versatile, feeling comfortable with lovers
melodies as dancehall like rhymes, but mostly with wailing
and deep roots tracks.
Tony is a real rastaman, meek and frendly, who find in Jah
his principal inspiration. The Sufferer's Cry lyrics are
mostly of theological matter, but it's a solid spirituality
resulting often in reality and militant songs.
The message of this rastaman reached Italy live and direct
in May 2000, with a little tour promoted by the italian
sound I AND I PROJECT to present the new album, in front of
thousands. Tony Roots confirmed to be a true big artist,
definitively a name to watch out for the next future.
