Meet the Egg once again, a band who have already proven their
ability to create airborne sounds through their critically
acclaimed "Albumen" album from 1996 and their live shows which have
become renowned as stunning visual extravaganzas; events no less.
On 29 June 1998 The Egg release their long awaited second full
length album. A rushing melange of trancing loops, deep Tahitian
fried funk and more than a hint of the band's own sense of humour,
it's an album which is the opposite of the static sounds which
abound today. It's a feast of aural movement, a true journey in
sound, it's called "Travelator" and no, it isn't crammed full of
dodgy world samples to labour the idea. The Egg are far more
creative than that. Just look at what they've already achieved.
Produced by Tim Holmes, best known for his work with The Chemical
Brothers amongst others, the album finds The Egg deep in breaks and
loops country adding a deeper dance groove to their music while,
ironically, fully capturing the energy and essence of the band's
live sound.
It's a collection which pulses, rushes and rolls. A mountainous
rubble of acid squelches, bleeping arpeggios and those trademark
loose limbed beats. With cuts like the vocoder soaked "Getting Away
With It" the band manage to combine the humour and groove of George
Clinton's "Atomic Dog" with the hypnotic ambience of Underworld,
it's the sound of trance culture hot wired and turned inside out.
"Number Cruncher" melts funky wah guitar with deep house ambience
and funky breaks while "Ben Hur" sees the band surfing more
humorous terrain, duck calls among the strangest sound in the sonic
artillery.
And this is the story throughout the ten tracks on "Travelator".
Beats that move, grooves that rush, guitars that jump, bass that
rolls; the sound of motion enhanced, captured and celebrated.
The Egg are a four piece band comprising of twin brothers Maff and
Ned Scott (drums and keyboards respectively), Dave Gaydon (bass)
and Mark Revell (guitar). Formed in 1994 in the idyllic
surroundings of Oxford the quartet soon married their love of dance
music, hip hop and funk, creating in the process a sound which was
both unique and going entirely against the grain of the
contemporary dance scene of the time. Undeterred by their apparent
fish out of water status, The Egg pursued their ideas and soon
discovered pockets of like minded souls around the country.
