A band that combine mastery of their instruments with the technical
wizardry of drum & bass, ambient, techno and the human intensity of
jazz. The material is written collectively by the band which is
made up of producer, arranger and bass player Neil Williams who is
also responsible for the programming and engineering, saxophonist
Jim Hunt, drummer Darrin Mooney (who also both regularly contribute
to recordings and live work with Primal Scream), guitarist Dave
Goodes and keyboardist Jim Watson.
The tunes often start life as improvised jam sessions in Neil's
studio and then, when all the guys have had their say, He
dissappears for several weeks at a time to mix and post-produce the
tracks, transforming them into a unique synthesis of humans and
technology. In the world of dance there are few acts that combine
such an approach to mixing live and programmed music.
INERTIA's first artist's album kicks off with RANSOM - the band
stretch out in full force led by Jim Hunt's soprano saxophone if
ever the expression jazzy drum & bass should be applied it should
be used here. WAIT is gentler and more spacious this time featuring
Jim on Tenor sax amidst subtle layers of guitars and keyboards.
GHOSTS has someone in the band literally screaming with intensity -
amongst the thundering drumming of Darren Mooney and dark textures
of guitars, keyboards and ominous bass. CARS is long and hypnotic
and has a slightly more synthetic and electronic feeling than the
other tracks with an ambient techno flavour - perfect late nite
driving music. MONKHAM HALL was inspired by "a moment of terror at
a gangster's wedding" according Neil who had the misfortune to be
playing bass in the dance band at the wedding in question.
SOLEMNITY is a haunting improvised duet for synths and computers by
Neil and Jim Watson. DESCENT has the whole band in jazz-jungle
fusion mode in part 1 and in part 2 just drums and keyboards bring
the tune down and then gradually build it up in a completely
different form eventually melting into the blissful ambient title
track WHAT IS IT? which started life with the whole band in jamming
in the studio and turned into a classic.
