Release Notes:
Pascal Comelade is a Catalan musician; born in Montpellier in
1955, he's now based in Ceret. In 1980, following a period
spent living in Barcelona, he produced his first album,
Paralelo, inspired by electronic music and French prog outfit
Heldon. Since then his music has become more and more
acoustic, characterized by the use of toy Kawai and
Michelsonne pianos, electric organ, accordion and guiars. Its
pastoral, faintly melancholy textures and moods are comparable
with those of the Penguin Cafe Orchestra or Robert Wyatt, with
whom he collaborates on a new track here, 'September Song'. In
1983, Comelade founded the Bel Canto Orchestra, and has since
produced over 40 albums and countless film scores,
collaborating with the likes of Jeanne Moreau, Jaki Liebezeit
(Can) and P.J. Harvey along the way.
The No Dancing isn't, alas, a career retrospective. Rather,
it's a survey of Comelade's recent career, collecting the
notable highlights from his past six albums: Danse et Chants
de Syldavie (1994), Musique pour Film (1997), L'Argot Du Bruit
(1998), Psicotic Music Hall (2002), Best Of (2007) and Metode
de Rocanrol (2007). Nonetheless, it's a robust introduction to
the charms of a fine and doggedly cultish artist.
