San Franciscan artist musician skateboarder Tommy Guerrero returns
to Mo' Wax with his first offering for over a year, the æJunk
CollectorÆ EP. Five more tracks of his trademark lo-fi stylings are
featured, of which; three are brand new, one is an unreleased remix
(æNumb MillenniumÆ reworked by Johnny Herndon of Tortoise/Isotope
217 fame) and one is a sought-after rarity (æSeasickÆ, previously
only available in Japan on the Mo' Wax æArt Of WarÆ compilation).
Now 34 years old, Tommy first came to prominence as a skateboarder
in 1985 when he turned pro for Powell Peralta. Specialising in
street skating, he went on to become part of the legendary æBones
BrigadeÆ (think a Harlem Globetrotters of the skating world) and
can be seen in pioneering skate films like æFuture PrimitiveÆ and
æThe Search For Animal ChinÆ. He left Powell in 1990 and quit the
circuit to set up REAL skateboards with fellow pro Jim Thiebaud,
where he can still be found.
Running concurrently to his success as a skater has always been his
love for music - in particular, punk. With over twenty years of
playing bass and guitar behind him, Tommy has (in his time)
appeared on the same bill as the likes of DOA and Bad Brains but as
the years have passed, he has strayed away from his roots, instead
opting for a much slower lane. You could go as far as saying that
the music simply mirrors the man - thereÆs a real DIY philosophy
(very akin to punk) and itÆs both inventive and incredibly laid
back.
The æJunk CollectorÆ EP also sees a ædream teamÆ collaboration with
another legendary pioneer of street skating, Mark æThe GonzÆ
Gonzales, who has provided the cover illustration. This package
should tide you over and keep your appetite suitably whetted for
next years follow-up album to the acclaimed æLittle Bit Of
Somethin'Æ and is an absolute must for every TG fan, young and old.
