Having just watched Tropicalia main players Caetano Veloso
and Gilberto Gil seek exile in England after Brazil's military
dictatorship turned on them, it was probably wise of Os
Mutantes to steer clear of the genre for this, their third album.
A Divinia Comedia Ou Ando Meio Desligado (which apparently
translates as The Divine Comedy, Or I Walk A Little
Disconnectedly, or... something) is far more connected to the
psychedelia and pop/rock sounds of Europe and North America
than its two predecessors, but comes off none the worse for its
lack of indigenous, domestically-sourced influences. 'Ave, Lucifer'
finds Os Mutantes in especially fine form, twisting their psych-pop
aesthetic to incorporate freakish orchestral interludes and other
such finely crafted diversions. The second side starts magnificently,
weirding you out with the sheer ordinariness of the fun, swingtime
of 'Hey Boy', before returning to the schizoid wonderland you might
be more accustomed to by the time 'Presiso Urgentemente Encontrar
Um Amigo' arrives, but that's only a warm up for the tape manipulated
lunacy of 'Chao De Estrelas' with its odd, 1920s flapper girl vibes.
Despite the change in musical strategy Os Mutantes were far from
a weakened force for this 1970 album, which nearly forty years on
sounds as bold and brilliant as it ever could have.
