New in the Ethiopiques series, this LP focuses on a
particular brand of culture clashing popular music of
the 1970s indigenous to Ethiopia. This vinyl-only selection
draws on tracks from the Ethiopiques CD catalogue, all
sharing similar creative themes and sonic hallmarks.
Consequently, you get an insight into the cross-pollinated
genres and East-meets-West fusions rife in Ethiopian
popular music of the time. On the whole, the selections
on the A-side seem to be geared towards American funk
and soul music, though a few unusual scales creep into
tracks like Wallias Band's 'Muziqawi Silt' via some choice
organ soloing. As you get further into the record you find
yourself in less harmonically familiar territory, with AsselefetchRnotes
Ashine and Getenesh Kebret's 'Amlak Abet Abet' hitting home
with some simple vocal and percussion arrangements.
