Swedish composer and prolific maker of soundtracks, Mr Matti Bye
here makes his solo recording debut. The title of his record is
"Dr÷mt", which is Swedish for dreamt. This title says a whole lot
about the music of Matti Bye.
Fantasy, reality, ages, conditions û they're all woven together on
"Dr÷mt". Woven into a quilt of dreams. It's an interplay between
tender and rough, between 2008 and 1908.
öI have very little demands on musicö, Matti explains and
continues with a hint of self-irony: öI want it to be larger than
life. I love discovering whole new worlds and conditions within
it. And to get there it's often good to mix different art forms.
It works like a rotation of crops û but for the mind.ö
To reach that condition between and beyond art forms, Matti asked
composer and arranger Johan Berthling to assist him in the
process. Except for having a studio full of clasically trained
musicians at their disposal, they also invited a cross section of
the swedish indie elite (Yes, it's a contradiction in terms!) û
including: Goran Kajfes, The Tiny and Jari Haapalainen û to join
them. öThe musicians are very different from each other, having
almost only in common the ability to play both rough and romantic
in styleö, Matti describes, he himself having experienced the rock
genre during the late 90's, with the band Ingy (whose record was
released by Warner/Telegram).
A lot of inspiration for the new album comes from the Finnish
musical underground scene, from artists and bands as Lau Nau and
Islaya. Lau Nau even contributes to Dr÷mt, credited as Laura
Naukkarinen, which is her real name. The circle becomes complete
with the fact that Laura also constitutes a third of psych folk
band Maailma together with Matti and Kristian Holmgren.
Matti Bye is widely considered as one of Sweden's most important
composers of film scores. Earlier this year he wrote the score for
Academy Award nominee Jan Troell's latest feature Everlasting
Moments. He is also recognized for having written a series of
innovative scores for the early Swedish silent film classics,
included on a DVD box set released just a couple of months ago by
Svensk Filmindustri, SF.
To go from film writing film scores to releasing a solo album as
an artist, is quite a challenge. But sometimes you have to the
distance to reach the condition beyond art forms û the condition
somewhere between dream and reality.
