Martyn's 'Vancouver/Natural Selection' 12" is simply one of the finest
bits of wax you'll hear this year, so any remix jobs had to be up to the
task, and by pulling in two of his favourite producers in the form of
Flying Lotus and fellow Dutchman 2562 to rework the tracks the results are
predictably, reassuringly f*cking immense. Flying Lotus's 'Cleanse mix' is
the biggest surprise, sticking to the frayed garage steppers framework but
brushing the rhythm with a detailed organic digitalism and splaying the
original melody into lush psychedelic shapes with mind melting potential.
This is the sort of rich, luxurious and endlessly inventive sh*t that we
just can't get enough of, and is surely one of the finest things you'll
hear this year. 2562, meanwhile, darkens and intensifies 'Natural
Selection' on his Puur Natuur dub with a realigned shuffle and ominous
atmospherics to work wonders on the floor, once again pushing the bar
beyond any sane levels of brilliance. We don't really need to tell you
that this is pretty much as essential as essential gets, so check the
samples and swoon...
