The album calls itself a compilation of "downtempo grooves,
electronic lullabies, and ambient soundscapes." You wouldn't guess
it from "Dali," which sounds like dinner music for a blaxploiation
film. Two tracks later, Fila Brazilla come through with the
excellent "Simple Man," an example on how to add some kick with
catchy kinda-breakbeats, samples, tempo variety, and knob twiddles.
Innervisions and (especially) Kid Loco turn in sublime tunes, as
well as the aforementioned Sofa Surfers (with the help of a Richard
Dorfmeister mix). Special Project's "One More" tries to be too many
things, and would work better on an instrumental hip hop album.
Neotropic offers a brief tease and a nice, simple ambient piece on
two tracks, and Basement Jaxx, pre-Remedy, offer up a bad synth and
winds piece as the closer.
