█░█▒ melodies and romantic reverb-filled vocals give ▒█░█
█░█▒ their songs the feel of a post-Smiths band. ▒█░█
█░█▒ Originally hailing from Lund, Sweden puts Oh! ▒█░█
█░█▒ Custer in the middle of some of the greatest names ▒█░█
█░█▒ in indie-pop today. Their latest EP, States is ▒█░█
█░█▒ better suited with the 'double EP' description as ▒█░█
█░█▒ it contains their first EP, Leaves, as bonus ▒█░█
█░█▒ tracks. In fact, the two EPs combined make a decent ▒█░█
█░█▒ full-length as Oh! Custer's sound didn't change ▒█░█
█░█▒ drastically between the two releases. Often ▒█░█
█░█▒ including heavy percussion in the form of drum ▒█░█
█░█▒ boxes and tambourines, the band is made up of Josef ▒█░█
█░█▒ and Esbj÷rn. The two currently live in separate ▒█░█
█░█▒ cities: Lund, Sweden and Oslo, Norway. The songs ▒█░█
█░█▒ are melodic; guitars have a dreamy jangle in the ▒█░█
█░█▒ form of live reverb while the vocals are given an ▒█░█
█░█▒ echo-y effect. Each song is packed with mopey pop ▒█░█
█░█▒ that will easily win over fansùsongs like "States" ▒█░█
█░█▒ and "So Much Better" are prime examples. States ▒█░█
█░█▒ concludes with "Magnolia" before diving into Leaves ▒█░█
█░█▒ with "Your Name". The former has an instantly ▒█░█
█░█▒ catchy drum box beat and the guitars only enhance ▒█░█
█░█▒ that notion, while the vocals here draw direct ▒█░█
█░█▒ connections with the aforementioned Morrissey ▒█░█
█░█▒ influence. It is clear that the one concludes an EP ▒█░█
█░█▒ and the next opens another as "Magnolia" fades out ▒█░█
█░█▒ and "Your Name" takes time in beginning again. ▒█░█
█░█▒ "Your Name" includes catchy vocal hooks and their ▒█░█
█░█▒ most jangle-y guitar riff yet; and that's the ▒█░█
█░█▒ biggest difference between the two EPs. Where the ▒█░█
█░█▒ guitar in States is given a heavy reverb overdose, ▒█░█
█░█▒ Leaves is much more jangle-oriented. Even the ▒█░█
█░█▒ vocals have slightly less reverb in Leaves. Still, ▒█░█
█░█▒ the distinction is not so extensive that it affects ▒█░█
█░█▒ the combined sound, thus making States / Leaves a ▒█░█
█░█▒ wonderful double EP, or even debut LP.- Fense" ▒█░█

█░█▒ || It's A Trap ||"Offhand, Custer, Ohio, USA, ▒█░█
█░█▒ springs to mind. This was likely unintentional and ▒█░█
█░█▒ fortunately, very few expect a band to be defined ▒█░█
█░█▒ by their name, at least not completely. "States" is ▒█░█
█░█▒ an EP, and included on the disc is their previous ▒█░█
█░█▒ EP release "Leaves". Two for one isn't a bad deal. ▒█░█
█░█▒ Throughout the record, jangly guitar, reverb-laden ▒█░█
█░█▒ vocals, and somber lyrics make for a sound not ▒█░█
█░█▒ unlike the UK's Field Mice. In fact, the title ▒█░█
█░█▒ track could be straight off a Sarah Records disc. ▒█░█
█░█▒ Unlike the Field Mice however, who are known for ▒█░█
█░█▒ dipping into a kind of beautiful comatose tempo, ▒█░█
█░█▒ the disc keeps up a steady pace, with some clever ▒█░█
█░█▒ hooks and a well-balanced indiepop mentality. Oh! ▒█░█
█░█▒ Custer, with only two members, has conjured up a ▒█░█
█░█▒ solid, energetic record. Fans of The Legends and ▒█░█
█░█▒ Comet Gain should take notice and give this a spin. ▒█░█

█░█▒ Sweden, this is their second release for an ▒█░█

█░█▒ and Celestial (among several others), this band ▒█░█
█░█▒ shows that the shoegaze sound is alive and well in ▒█░█
█░█▒ Sweden. This duo's sound isn't as densely layered ▒█░█
█░█▒ as those other bands, but it does have a definite ▒█░█
█░█▒ dreamy quality like Brighter or the Field Mice, ▒█░█
█░█▒ thanks to the wispy guitars and reverbed-out ▒█░█
█░█▒ vocals. The first six songs on the disc make up the ▒█░█
█░█▒ actual "States" EP, while the last five songs are ▒█░█
█░█▒ from the band's self-released debut EP from last ▒█░█
█░█▒ year. The songwriting isn't too different between ▒█░█
█░█▒ the two eras; the earlier material features shorter ▒█░█
█░█▒ songs and a more primitive production quality, ▒█░█
█░█▒ while the newer songs show the band using a bit ▒█░█
█░█▒ more variety to expand their sound. This new label ▒█░█
█░█▒ from Nebraska has plans to release lots more ▒█░█

█░█▒ Custer has been described as a "two man social ▒█░█
█░█▒ project producing sounds easily mistaken for ▒█░█
█░█▒ songs." It is the brainchild of a couple of dudes ▒█░█
█░█▒ from Sweden named Josef & Esbj÷rn and it's a ▒█░█
█░█▒ beautiful amalgamation of shoegaze and 80's mope ▒█░█
█░█▒ rock. The difference is that their music makes me ▒█░█
█░█▒ happier than those genre's would suggest. The songs ▒█░█
█░█▒ are actually quite simple, with chorus's that are ▒█░█
█░█▒ incredibly easy to memorize and sing along to. The ▒█░█
█░█▒ album also plays as one continuous piece, not in a ▒█░█
█░█▒ progressive rock sort of way, but the individual ▒█░█
█░█▒ songs are held together by sounds of nature and ▒█░█
█░█▒ white noise. This is interesting because, although ▒█░█
█░█▒ the idea sounds pretentious, the execution of such ▒█░█
█░█▒ comes across otherwise. If there is one complaint, ▒█░█
█░█▒ it is that the songs all start to sound the same ▒█░█
█░█▒ after a while. However, the eleven songs clock in ▒█░█
█░█▒ at just over half an hour, which keeps things from ▒█░█
█░█▒ sounding monotonous. This is a gratifying little ▒█░█
█░█▒ release, with lush, lo-fi arrangements and sonorous ▒█░█
█░█▒ melodies designed strictly to entertain. I highly ▒█░█
█░█▒ recommend the songs 'Post,' 'Keep It Coming,' and ▒█░█

█░█▒ Oh! Custer. Again, this was a band I'd been emailed ▒█░█
█░█▒ about (to anyone who thinks I've ignored their ▒█░█
█░█▒ emails, I haven't, but there's only one of me and ▒█░█
█░█▒ this isn't the day job). This is gorgeous indie-pop ▒█░█
█░█▒ with both jangling guitars and a gorgeous ▒█░█
█░█▒ shimmering of shoegazing, or dream pop, as the ▒█░█
█░█▒ North Americans call it. I'm not going to reel off ▒█░█
█░█▒ a list of other bands that they sound like, just ▒█░█
█░█▒ beg you to judge these three excellent tracks on ▒█░█
█░█▒ their own merits and go and buy the album States. " ▒█░█
