We've got a serious crush on this label now. The latest arrival swept in
on a cloud of dry ice from the distributors, with two sides of Nite
Jewel's sumptuous narco-disco winner 'What did he say?', making sure
those clammy hands were in full effect. Nite Jewel, or Ramona G to her
suitors, hails from LA, CA, USA, and her music is deeply scored with a
louche and glamorous late night feel that you'd imagine the city to be
drenched in, but mixed with a knowing self-awareness shared by her label
mates at the city's Human Ear Music (Ariel Pink, Gary Wilson etc). 'The
slow spinning A-side 'What Did He Say' is another of those scarily
seductive IDIB songs, rocking a slow and purple hued electro-soul beat
with those effervescent tape-recorded atmospherics, Nite Jewel haunts
the track with tender but distant vocal delivery with an intangible
Arthur Russell-ish disco yearning that's just irresistable. 'Let's go
the two of us together' on the flip climbs the tempo up to a cowbell
-lead Theo Parrish bump groove with a juicy Other People Place midnight
bassline to boot, and Nite Jewel again providing a chillingly authentic
but ethereal vocal line slipping over the slink-rhythm like a thread of
fine silk. This is a brilliant 12", get the valium in and melt into it.
