Balance is back with the fourth instalment in their acclaimed Electric
series, and this time Agent 086 has had the honour to take care of the
mixing. Agent 86, now who might that be? The guy hails from Adelaide and has
been a familiar face in the DMC and ITF mix competitions for years, making a
name for himself as a true underground pioneer. And mind you, he's not the
guy to be pigeon-holed. His sound stretches from disco, new wave and funk to
electro, pop, techno and anything in between. Sounds mighty interesting,
don't you think? Let's see what he has churned out...
The mix opens with 40 Thieves - Don't Turn It Off and a handful of samples. A
solid disco groove drops and we engage into funk mode. Spacey synthesizers
reveal the fact that we're dealing with a modern disco tune here, but it
still has that 70's vibe, only enhanced with cosmic elements. A smooth follow
up comes in the form of Pacific Air Race by Aeroplane, a tune that holds the
middle between disco and house and features some fancy vintage (70's/80's)
disco chords. After that, Agent 86 switches from this arousing oldschool vibe
to a more darker club vibe with the deep disco/house hybrid Start Something
by Morten Sorenson. The mix then takes off to new heights with a string of
leftfield 21st century cosmic disco with tracks from Bermuda and Toby Neal
(watch out for the screeaaaaming synths on Neal's contribution,
whoa).Bumper's Detroit goes back to early '80's electro with funky beats,
wah-wah guitars, throbbing bass-lines and of course, robot vox! Spektrum
delivers a rather noisy tune, but the attention is full back when Bangkok
Impact drops his amazing remix of Casco presents BWH's Stop. Slow robot
vocals, freaky futuristic synths and vintage bass-lines makes up a highly
exciting tune.
My 80's Funk by Enzio Ponzio could be the soundtrack of Miami Vice 2010,
while Miguel Migs'So Far has been remixed into a VERY cosmic disco affair
with the synthesizers being the main attraction here. Ace tune. More of that
comes in the form of Drop Out Orchestra's Gibbon, DJ Agent 86's own excellent
80's block party shuffle Roxy, and a very punky chunk of powerhouse by The
Spirals. 86 then pitches things up with LSB's Fog, a track that holds the
middle between disco and rock and has a real cool 80's vibe (yup, again),
while Bary Mason's Body! Get Your Body (Faze Action remix) drops some more
disco terror with references to the sound of the Defected label. One of the
hottest tunes on this comp comes in the form of the jack slamming Galaxy Race
(Jussi Pekka remix) by Bermuda. A bass-line-fueled structure with vintage
claps, techy cymbals and simply fantastic synth riff create a deep spacey
acid/Detroit/Chicago/orbital trip that will blow the roof of any club.
Stomping, dead serious disco beats in freak mode.86 then returns back to
futuristic disco and electro with tunes by Mawkish and Soundtroopers (whose
tune oozes with sounds, samples, booty-shaking robots and what not), after
which Groove Allegiance's Hunkle My Funkle closes the mix with the frenzy
break-beat-boombass blast that is their tune.
There's plenty of stuff for 70/80's loving disco dancers to turn to these
months, as we've seen quite a few cosmic disco/afrobeat/electro releases over
the past few weeks (and there's much more to come, trust me!). Electric 04 is
definitely one that stands out from the crowd, as 86's has delivered a
smoothly mixed flow of the hottest in synth-oozing underground, futuristic
disco and electro. Spicey stuff that is bound to move your ass.
