A unique and charismatic kora duo consisting of Maher Cissoko, who was born to
be a kora player and developed his own danceable kora style, and Sousou Cissoko,
who was captured by the sound of kora and is now one of very few female kora
players in the world. They both have one foot in tradition and the other foot in
the future. Through expressive singing and the rhythmically rocking kora
repertoire from Casamance spiced up by drumming, they hope to bring this
beautiful West African music closer to you.
This is their story:
It was the year of 2001 and two young musicians in different parts of the world
each made a decisive choice to experience another culture in order to explore
the kora music.
At that time Maher Cissoko was working in the Gambia playing the kora and there
he got the opportunity to travel to Germany to spread his music.
Maher Cissoko was brought up with the West African music tradition in Casamance
in southern Senegal. He is from a famous Jali family and has been surrounded by
music all of his life. Jalis are Griots (hereditary musicians) and they have
functioned as carriers of history and tradition from generation to generation
for more than 700 years. Maher learnt the kora from his father Jali Kemo
Cissoko, who learnt from his father and so on. Maher has embellished the
tradition and developed his own explosive style of kora playing. Besides playing
the kora, Maher also learnt to play many different West African percussion
intruments during his upbringing such as Calabash, Djembe, Doun-Doun and Tama
(Talking Drum)
Sousou Cissoko fell in love with the kora the very first time she heard it, so
when she finished school she decided to travel to the Gambia to learn how to
play the kora. Sousou was born in southern Sweden (Given name: Sousou Hagberth
Gottlow) in a family full of music. She has been singing and playing various
instruments all of her life.
