Raster end the year with what must surely rank as one of the
SICKEST records of 2008 with the first installment of a series
entitled Unununium from Japan's Kouhei Matsunaga and Toshio
Munehiro, a name derived from the series of greek atomic numbers
of the chemical elements 111-119. Kouhei has previously worked
with Sean Booth of Autechre, Merzbow, Asmus Tietchens and Mika
Vainio, with all of whom the pair share an aural aesthetic of
exceedingly powerful and abrasive digital techno, serving the dual
purpose of club wrecking and intense home listening. For us, this
is the absolute business. When 'Entire Set' opens with broken
slabs of boulder drums and rigid snare smacks sounding like some
T++ syncopation on steroids, to the following stylus disintegrator
'Persedes' you know you're in the presence of something absolutely
devastating. The frozen solid CoH styles on '_1' are purest techno
mixed with a hardcore hiphop attitude, while '07414_0833' is a
thoroughly destroyed rush of digital information maximised and
then dismantled into a brain frying blast of smartness. 'Entire
Set 2' completes the assault with a Byetone alike thump of
dancefloor futurism mixed with signals that would make Merzbow
ring home for comfort. If you've been feeling the latest direction
of Alva Noto's new Unitxt project or Byetone's recent remix work,
and got a good buzz from the Ae album, this is most certainly for
you. ULTRA ULTREA HEAVYWEIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
