It all seems to be happening in Brooklyn nowadays. So many
hotly tipped new artists seems to have ties to the place, and
Lia Ices is another name to add to that list. Necima is the
singer-songwriter's debut, arriving on the new Rare Book Room
imprint, which has got off to a blinding start thanks to three
brilliant long-players (including the excellent Living Bridge
double album). Inevitably, comparisons will be made with Kate
Bush and more contemporary artists like Feist and Bat For
Lashes, and sure enough 'Medecine Wheel' follows along those
lines - almost reproducing the vocal quirks of those artists
at times - but it's actually pretty special nonetheless,
combining clanging, heavy-handed piano chords with aggressive
string arrangements. This pretty much sets up the tone of the
album in general, but these seemingly rather stock
arrangements serve the songs brilliantly. '(un)Chosen One'
takes some of the focus away from the piano, bringing a little
guitar into the mix, and at least in part suggesting Cat
Power. It must be incredibly difficult trying to start out as
a female singer-songwriter nowadays - especially with people
like me comparing all new artists to other, already
established female songwriters - but Lia Ices rises to the
challenge.
