Following on from the great Living Bridge compilation released
a couple of weeks back, this album arrives from the unlikely,
transcontinental duo of Berlin resident Nadja Korinth (a BBC
news correspondent) and New Yorker Ryan Schaefer, who perhaps
true to the form of a duo separated by an ocean can't seem to
nail down any single sound and stick to it. This makes for a
strange, but often excellent album, sung in three different
languages (English, German and French) and taking on a variety
of different outsider musical genres, from the ice cool
Euro-pop of 'Monte Alban' (imagine Glass Candy re-recording
Goldfrapp's first album, if you will), to the scuzzy boogie
woogie of 'Leather Daddies' or 'End Of Term's weird Women &
Children-like post-folk. A strange, erratic collection of
songs that readily hops from one idea to the next, It's
Midnight In Honolulu is a beguiling thirty minutes, and serves
as an excellent first artist album for the fledgling Rare Book
Room imprint.
