I started Estereo Recordings in September 1997, and ran it along side
of my main role as overall manager of label, production, and
marketing for Skint and Loaded records until spring 1999 when I took
on Estereo full time and brought it up the motorway from Brighton to
London. The idea was to have a base which could release consistently
and regularly, solid, undiluted dance music that is both current and
collectible. That splits it roughly into two musical types, music for
a time and music for all time meaning that whilst it's exciting to
move ahead and develop using current sounds, styles and recording
techniques, the main show will always be rooted in classic
productions.
This can be any style of dance music with artists that want to
develop. Any style that's original, emotive or has the X factor. The
KLF said that if you got two people to make the same record exactly
in two separate but identical studios you would be able to tell which
one made the track with soul. With that in mind, these days with
there being so much music around it's important to move with styles
and changes but always retain that X Factor and the feeling so that
every release and gig is the genuine article. Otherwise it all turns
into a kind of musical sausage factory.
The origin of the music is the suburbs but on a global scale, made in
a house near you basically. Some of the larger productions like Bah
Samba require bigger studios and some of the artists like Frankie
Valentine always record in Germany because of the specific sound he
is after. Being global in origin means you can expect a twisted dirty
house track like New York's Marlo (music for a time) along side
Brighton based Bah Samba a live twelve piece Latin band (music for
all time).
It's still early days in the big picture but there have already been
some goose bump times, like Norman Jay rocking Lenny Fontana's
'Spread Love' for ten minutes on his radio one mix, including it on
his 'Good Times' compilation and saying in 7 magazine that it is his
tune of the year, to Masters At Work dropping Bah Samba at this years
Southport and The Sunday Times naming them as 'Band To Watch', as
well as seeing them perform on the beach in Brighton and then
transfer that to Soulsonic in London without loosing a drop of
energy, Alice winning the crowd with the first line she sang. There
was also the time when Paula Ralph performed Willy Washington's
'Ain't No Runnin' Away' at New York's Body and Soul.
However with the increased accessibility of technology the sounds and
styles that are coming through are changing everything, and change is
always a good thing.
