Release Notes:

It's a mystery how the Move have missed out on the fame and
reputation enjoyed by contemporaries such as the Kinks, the
Who and the Small Faces. For an all too brief lifespan of four
years, they were a tremendous force. Their suited singer, Carl
Wayne, was an icon of gangster cool, guitarist Roy Wood was a
songwriter of rare inventiveness, and drummer Bev Bevan was a
gifted pyrotechnician.

Ambitiously taking on most of British rock's growing
repertoire of innovations, the Move threw their cap at
everything from the mod theatrics of the Who - smashing
television sets with axes and detonating explosives on stage -
to the chamber pop experiments of the Beatles. Their talent
for creating catchy three-minute singles made them regular
chart fixtures and led to their psychedelic ditty Flowers in
the Rain being chosen as the first single played on BBC's
Radio One in 1967.

But band morale started to crumble after their manager, Tony
Secunda, an ex-wrestler from Streatham, used a libellous image
of the then PM Harold Wilson on the sleeve of one of their
singles which resulted in a costly law suit. Eventually their
musical brain, Wood, left to form Wizzard.

The story is well told on this long-overdue four-CD set which
contains all the big hits - Night of Fear, Fire Brigade, I Can
Hear the Grass Grow and, sounding lovelier than ever,
Blackberry Way - while Mist on a Monday Morning contains
Wood's most affectingly lyrical string arrangements. Those
wanting a shot of something more visceral can head straight to
CD2, a rare live recording of the Move at the Marquee in
London - proof, if any is needed, that nobody rocked harder in
1968 than this stroppy Brummie quintet.
