░█▒ Lapis Niger is the solo project of Swedish author and musician ▒█░
░█▒ Tommie Eriksson, and At The Throne Of Melek Taus is the band's ▒█░
░█▒ debut release (this band, incidentally, is not to be confused ▒█░
░█▒ with the Italian black metal band of the same name). The ▒█░
░█▒ gold-on-black sigil surrounded by Arabic script on the cover of ▒█░
░█▒ the album's digipack sleeve bears a distant resemblance to a ▒█░
░█▒ Cenobite puzzle box, and offers an indication of Lapis Niger's ▒█░
░█▒ esoteric inclinations. The Athanor website also has this to say: ▒█░
░█▒ ▒█░
░█▒ Lapis Niger symbolises the black diamond of Draconian Alchemy, ▒█░
░█▒ the eternal star of Thaumiel of the Qliphotic Qabalah. Thus ▒█░
░█▒ following a magician┤s inner journey, this musical expression ▒█░
░█▒ opens up the gate to the world of Samael, averse counterpart of ▒█░
░█▒ the Sephirah Hod in the Qabalahà [Eriksson's] work is an ▒█░
░█▒ expression of the Draconian Current as channelled in Dragon ▒█░
░█▒ Rouge û Ordo Draconis et Atri Adamantis. ▒█░
░█▒ ▒█░
░█▒ The specific source for the name Melek Taus is the cosmology of ▒█░
░█▒ the Yezidi, a small and much-persecuted Kurdish sect who live in ▒█░
░█▒ Iraq, and are regarded by the Muslim majority community as ▒█░
░█▒ devil-worshippers. The beliefs of the Yezidi are in fact more ▒█░
░█▒ Gnostic in nature û the peacock god Melek Taus is a demiurge, an ▒█░
░█▒ archangel who intercedes between God and man. He's also known as ▒█░
░█▒ Shaytan, i.e. Satan, and he parallels the figure of Lucifer in ▒█░
░█▒ the Judeo-Christian tradition. ▒█░
░█▒ ▒█░
░█▒ As might be expected from the album's title and theme, there is ▒█░
░█▒ a heavy middle-eastern influence evident throughout At The ▒█░
░█▒ Throne Of Melek Taus, recalling albums such as the recent ▒█░
░█▒ Golgatha release Seven Pilllars (also released by Athanor), ▒█░
░█▒ Rukkanor's Deora, Arcana's 2004 album Le Serpent Rouge, and, ▒█░
░█▒ looking further back, the Orientalist work of Dead Can Dance. At ▒█░
░█▒ The Throne Of Melek Taus opens with 'Al-Sahra', a composition of ▒█░
░█▒ thick, woozy drones in the vein of Ars Regia-era Ain Soph, which ▒█░
░█▒ is involving but too short at just over three minutes to realise ▒█░
░█▒ its full hypnotic potential. 'Black Serpent Dance', which ▒█░
░█▒ follows, is very different, an Arabian Nights phantasmagoria of ▒█░
░█▒ plucked strings, exotic percussion and crashing gongs. 'Mashaf ▒█░
░█▒ Rash' is a short and inconsequential track of muted horns, but ▒█░
░█▒ the centrepiece of the album is the two-part title track which ▒█░
░█▒ follows. 'At The Throne Of Melek Taus Part I' builds on the ▒█░
░█▒ musical palette of 'Black Serpent Dance', adding a dramatic ▒█░
░█▒ invocation in Arabic (the only vocals on the album), orchestral ▒█░
░█▒ strings and oboe, finger cymbals and minatory rattles. 'At The ▒█░
░█▒ Throne Of Melek Taus Part II' is a radical departure, with ▒█░
░█▒ howling drone-based ambient evoking the vicious, scouring ▒█░
░█▒ sandstorms of the Sahara, giving way towards the track's end to ▒█░
░█▒ abstract electronica. 'Sanjaq Worship' continues in this ambient ▒█░
░█▒ mode, with stretched tones reverberating through a desolate ▒█░
░█▒ soundscape and an absence of melody. 'Inside The Black Pearl û ▒█░
░█▒ Lapis Niger' is the album's only track to effect a fusion ▒█░
░█▒ between the two kinds of music we've heard elsewhere, the dark ▒█░
░█▒ ambient drone pieces and the more melodic, orchestral pieces, ▒█░
░█▒ and as a consequence it's the album's most successful song, and ▒█░
░█▒ a pointer to the direction Lapis Niger should take towards ▒█░
░█▒ establishing a truly original sound. The final track, 'Kitab ▒█░
░█▒ Al-Jilwah' is a short melodic outro, with delicate chimes and ▒█░
░█▒ orchestral strings. ▒█░
░█▒ ▒█░
░█▒ Ultimately, At The Throne Of Melek Taus is good but not ▒█░
░█▒ outstanding. Its middle-eastern exoticism hardly breaks new ▒█░
░█▒ ground, and the simple alternation between drones and melodies ▒█░
░█▒ doesn't really work, but as mentioned above, when Lapis Niger's ▒█░
░█▒ sound is fully integrated, there's potential for interesting ▒█░
░█▒ development. It'll be interesting to see where this project goes ▒█░
░█▒ next, but in the meantime, fans of Cold Meat Industry bands such ▒█░
░█▒ as Arcana, Coph Nia or The Protagonist might still find Lapis ▒█░
░█▒ Niger worth a look. ▒█░
