From Boomkat:
The origins of Hedonism hark back to a time prior to the release of Kalmukia, before cellist Hildur
Gudnadottir got involved with the project. Pan Sonic's Ilpo Vaisanen and Schneider TM's Dirk Dresselhaus
began work together in 1999, but after all that time, this marks their first album as a duo. Hedonism is a
dark and intense swirl of analogue electronics, digital processing and stark, metallic timbres, beginning
with the vicious tearing noises of 'Holding Loose', which flails and staggers around noisily, dominated by
brutal sonorities and occasional bouts of rhythmic cogency. Vaisanen and Dresselhaus certainly aren't
giving anyone an easy way into this record, but more pensive, drone-based studies crop up on 'Unknown
Dawn' and 'Spectral Gate'. It tends to be more visceral moments like 'Hatch', or the concrete terrorism of
'Unsymmetric Distance' that provide the biggest highs though, referencing the computerised sophistication
of early Mego releases whilst getting back to basics with a firm grasp on more primitive, industrial-inspired
noise sculpting techniques. The majestic 'Mirrorworld' singles itself out for its expansiveness and long-form
ambition: within twenty minutes the piece develops from a stirring network of sustaining string-like sounds
and aircraft rumble into a full volume screech that's actually as joyful as it is terrorising. A stunning
collection of large-scale noise pieces and experimental electronics in the greatest Mego tradition - highly
recommended.
