A project directed by SouRce Research Recordings Ian Mackinnon,
Emre (Dark Matter) has at its basis a proposition to work on
darkness and light.
The resulting gloomy album of avant-garde electronics shows that
selected artists decided to concentrate on the former. Each track
was created for the purpose of this album and one of its strengths
is its cohesion.
SouRce Research opens and closes the album with two short pieces of
bleeping electronics. Cyclobe contributes a demented track, haunted
by cat-like supplicating meows and claustrophobic atmospheres:
delightfully deranged, although very restrained decibel-wise.
Andrew Poppy's Blind Fold brings anticlimactic contrast with its
stripped-down electric piano piece. The sparse notes and erratic
playing recalls pianist Ernesto Diaz-Infante (but deprived from his
usual serenity).
This piece is much more convincing than Poppy's CD Time at Rest
Devouring Its Secret. COH gets very close to musique concrΦte while
Leif Elggren's association with SouRce Research gave birth to a
disquieting piece of soft hiss, burbling electronics, and treated
voice (reminiscent of Elggren's Mother!? on the Ash International
compilation album Hiss).
Coil blends noise with electronics, samples, and a male voice
reciting As I fell into the water, I slipped and broke my aura: the
album's highlight.
Ovum provides a slice of noise before the soft closing electronics.
Emre (Dark Matter) is a compelling journey into the darkest regions
of the psyche, demented cutting-edge electronic experimentation,
and one of the strongest compilation albums in this field. Very
