R.Skelton (here recording as Clouwbeck) has proven to be one of
2008's most widely praised artists, cropping up regularly in
various end of year charts (our own included) with his arrestingly
beautiful long-player, Marking Time. While that album received a
comparatively high profile release via Preservation, much of
Skelton's oeuvre tends to be restricted to his own private press,
Sustain-Release, which delivers idiosyncratic - and often very
lavishly packaged - small runs of his amazing music under a
selection of different monikers, including A Broken Consort,
Landings and Clouwbeck. It's under this latter nom de plume that
Skelton delivers A Moraine, which takes on a more withdrawn sound
than the post-folk and neo-classicism of Marking Time. The music
here is divided into three parts, though structurally it could be
considered as a single half-hour composition. Miasmic, minor chord
string swells preside over the piece, droning and overlapping one
another as if in tidal motion - the music's rhythmic signature is
determined by Skelton's languid back-and-forth bow-strokes and the
interplay between various layers of stretched out, somnolent
tones. A careful listen reveals all manner of secondary melodies
residing within the hypnotic swirl, and violins plot out small
phrases - suggestive and submerged, ultimately culminating in the
fiery midway peaks of 'Anlauesargh', the album's second and
longest movement. It's during this sequence that you really get a
feel for the magnitude of Skelton's talent: he establishes a
hauntingly morose harmonic interplay, all wrapped up within a
context of reverberant, profoundly resonant production. The
slowness, subtlety and focus of A Moraine makes for a fittingly
elegiac end of year listen, and it's a perfect accompaniment to
the magical 'Marking Time' album.
