| | New Zealand label Samurai Music continues its | |
| | run of high quality releases with undoubtedly | |
| | its biggest yet. State Of Mind & Trei's 'True | |
| | Stories' was the tune that began the label | |
| | and it was only right that we ask Wellington, | |
| | New Zealand's production titans The Upbeats | |
| | to take on remix duties. Wasting no time in | |
| | sprinting into the first drop, a teetering | |
| | sonic whirl guides the beats into one of the | |
| | most menacingly dirty funk fuelled riffs | |
| | produced by man and machine. Imagine Jeremy | |
| | and Dylan as the digital equivalent of Slayer | |
| | jamming with Funkadelic and you just might | |
| | get the picture. Drop number two manages to | |
| | double up the anticipation and magnify the | |
| | grinding funk once again. Cemented by a | |
| | gargantuan bass rumble, this is some | |
| | extremely innovative drum and bass. The | |
| | office chairs at the Samurai Music office | |
| | were kicked away in order to salute the | |
| | colossal thunder their version provides as it | |
| | dropped through our speakers for the first | |
| | time! | |
| | | |
| | 'The Weka' continues the rule free approach | |
| | to music production. Winding up with a | |
| | sinister lead intro, the rolling drive | |
| | gathers momentum with an almost 4/4 | |
| | progression that gets smashed apart by a | |
| | slicing bass riff and a chaotic drum fill | |
| | that hints at total collapse, only to | |
| | increase the tension of its underlying | |
| | bounce. Once we get to the drop, our sister | |
| | 4/4 roll is discarded to concentrate on a | |
| | rollicking pure digital groove. 'The Weka''s | |
| | core groove is undeniably coarse and uneasy, | |
| | but one that results in crowds nodding their | |
| | heads in blissful union and DJs being forced | |
| | to take it from the top. | |

| | To prove the magnitude of this release, | |
| | Samurai Music switched formats to 12" single | |
| | from our beloved 10" and had Stu from | |
| | Metropolis take on mastering duties. The | |
| | results speak for themselves. You need this | |
| | record in your life! | |
