From the man who remixed the alltime classic breaks version of
Circulation's Turquoise, comes his debut mix compilation CD under
Rennie Pilgrem's Thursday Club Recordings.
Following on from TCR's 50th release album, Modernizm is a broad-minded
selection.
This reflects the wide range of styles that are all emerging in the
breaks scene. A wide spectrum of producers from scenes as diverse as
trance and drum and bass are all making breaks tunes.
This mix certainly has something for everyone, without loosing the feel.
Kicking in with Chris Carter's "Plex", the mix starts on an upbeat
tip, and slips nicely into "Cayo La Luna" by the Dub Marines, a
ripping little number.
The Funkaholics get deep with "Hype It Up", which features some nice
MCing.
"Triffid" blows up into the mix, Rennie Pilgrim and B.L.I.M doing
the duties in making an intense track.
"The Sermon" is reviewed elsewhere, and is a humorous roller with
lots of nice percussion, and lots of techno influenced blobby bits.
"Voyager" builds up atmospherically into a simple but uplifting funky
strutta. Nice old Skool vocal snippets but the cherry on the cake.
"Mr. Jingles" is a full on sub workout with nasty stabs and breakdown
to mess with your head. Provided by the 2Sinners, this track sits
nicely within the mix.
"I Robot" takes things further, BLIM and Carter creation leans towards
the darkside in a minimal techno style.
Loads of electro bleeps and a dirty bass give this a sci-fi feel.
"Brain Barrel" by Subphonic is certainly darker. Huge clanging drums
come in and out of the mix, whilst the bass holds steady in a quietly
menacing way.
"Y-Trip" is by Breakneck, on a more relaxed tip, the track has a housy
feel, but in a breakbeat style.
"Check It Out" is a funky electro track with plenty of percussion,
a squelching acidic bass and a party vibe.
"Eskimo" has been getting the acclaim of the music press, and Pilgrem
and BLIM must be well chuffed with this track, as it manages to encompass
everything good about the breaks scene in one track.
"New Frontiers" by Waveform is a minimal track that uses filtered
drums to great effect, and produces a real sense of movement.
"The Swarm" is full on, uses old skool samples, and an old skool approach
to produce a very acidic track.
Modernizm is a great compilation, of some of the best breaks around,
and features a compelling selection of bleeping buzzing tracks that are
bound to keep the interest of the listener for a while to come.
