New Orleans electronica duo Telefon Tel Aviv left
their former label, the Chicago based Hefty
Records, in favor of Ellen Allien's heralded
Bpitch Control for their third record. Immolate
Yourself finds the group headed in a new
direction. Perhaps its because they're fresh off
of a remix comp (2007's Remixes Compiled), but
Telefon Tel Aviv seems more interested in
hip-shaking dance music than chin-scratching IDM
this time around. You can still expect the
immaculate sheen that comes with their laptop
production, but early single "You Are the Worst
Thing in the World" seems to favor electro-pop
grooves over edit-heavy microhouse. Telefon Tel
Aviv's mission statement is to "achieve the
complete hybridization of music," and this record
finds them moving one step closer to that goal.
