Wednesday 22nd May - Jeff Mills Live at Maida Vale
Appearing in the late 80's as radio DJ "The Wizard" and
the mastermind in 'The Final Cut', Jeff Mills took up
the heritage of the "Techno fathers" Kevin Saunderson,
Juan Atkins and Derrick May. Mills characterised the new
Detroit Techno sound like no one else and together with
Mike Banks and Robert "The Vision" Hood founded
Underground Resistance.
Underground Resistance released mostly instrumental
12-inches, but also tracks with vocalist Yolanda
Reynolds. They lifted older Disco and Soul traditions
founded by Motown Records to another level, combining
voices from the 60's with a 90's sound, the 'X-101',
'X-102', and 'X-103' series (released in Europe by
Tresor Records) being a prime example.
Eager to maintain his DJ-career, Jeff became a resident
at the Limelight, one of Manhattan's largest clubs. The
distance between Detroit and New York made co-operation
with Banks and Hood impossible however, so he left
Underground Resistance.
Jeff released his first album "Waveform Transmissions
Vol. 1" in 1992 epitomising the current state of
Electronic Music. Around the same time he founded his
own label, Axis Records, releasing futuristic and
experimental sounds. Now based in Chicago, Jeff
regularly set out for other cities like Paris, London,
Manchester, Rome, Berlin and Tokyo.
By 1996 he had become interested in the DJ and his art
(ie turntablism) and so founded his second label
'Purpose Maker', to provide turntablists with the sounds
needed for Techno dance floors; rhythmically saturated
and loop-oriented music built especially for DJ
blending. In 1999 Jeff founded his third label,
Tomorrow, enabling him to introduce more futuristic and
experimental directions.
As well as material for DJ's Jeff has released several
CDs, including the Purpose Maker Compilation (React),
Lifelike (News), The Art of Connecting (Next Era,
Hardware), The Other Day (Purpose Maker), From the 21st
(Sony Japan) and Every Dog Has Its Day"(NEWS/Labels).
The Mix Up Vol. 2 - Jeff Mills: Live-Mix at Liquid Room,
Tokyo mix-CD (Sony).
Finally in 2000, inspired by Fritz Lang's silent film
"Metropolis" Mills recorded his own soundtrack to the
film and was later involved in a re-edit of the movie to
fit his new soundtrack.
You can catch Jeff playing on the following dates;
Friday 24th May at Tribal Sessions at Sankeys Soap in
Manchester
Saturday 25th May at Shine at BSU Belfast in N. Ireland
Friday 31st May at Pressure at The Arches in Glasgow
Saturday 1st June at Homelands at the Winchester Bowl in
Winchester
Sunday 2nd June at the Redbox in Dublin
Saturday 15th June at Sonar at Fira 2 in Barcelona
