Recently recovered from the Swedish National Radio
Archive, this set of recordings from Afro-Cuban
percussionist Sabu Martinez fuses together
progressive funk and wild free jazz, with the dextrous
performance of Martinez as the glue holding all the
elements together.
Joining Martinez, are Stephen Moller on drums, Wlodek
Gulgowski on keyboards, Brent Rosengren on flute/sax
and a bassplayer no one's as yet been able to identify,
which is something of a shame considering he/she is
owed a great deal of credit for the vibrancy of this record.
Both the title track and 'Bernt' feature contributions
bordering on the athletic from the assembled players,
and the rhythm section is explosive without ever breaking
out of a clearly defined groove. The original 1973 tracklist
is complemented here by three additional bonus tracks,
'The Polyvox Sessions', recorded a year later.
The recordings are somewhat rougher, but musically it's
more reined in, placing emphasis on a hard-rocking funk
sound over and above the expressive jazz of the Burned
Sugar sessions. Revelatory stuff, and it's all beautifully
presented by the Mellotronen label.
