This collaboration between noise orchestra Zeitkratzer and Carsten Nicolai was initiated almost a full
decade ago, with one of the pieces, 'C1' being premiered in 2000. In this case the music is derived from
amplified instrumentation, taking on a bottom-heavy, dronescape that's just about abstracted enough from
its source to seem otherworldly. The slow, traceless bowing gives little away, and there are passages that
could pass as an Oren Ambarchi composition. '5min' (which is actually eight minutes long) is explicitly
electronic, following a pulsating blip sound across a subtly shifting tapestry of drone tones and sub-bass
timbres. 'Synchron Bitwave' is the most explicitly Alva Noto-like piece, echoing the fuzzy bitstream dirges
of the Xerrox project and the computer-piano dialogues of the Ryuichi Sakamoto collaborations. It's a tense
and disciplined sixteen minutes, consuming itself in a tumultuous closing stage. Thrilling stuff throughout.
