Dj Sprinkle's aka Terre Thaemlitz debut full length album,
continues with themes from 1998's "Sloppy 42nds: A tribute to the
42nd Street transsexual clubs destroyed by Walt Disney's buyout of
Times Square" (a track recently featured on Ame's "Coast2Coast" DJ
mix compilation for NRK Records). While the world celebrates the
revival of New York House Music, constructing utopian fictions
about the genre as it goes along, DJ Sprinkles retreats deep into
the bowels of house. This is the rhythm of empty midtown
dancefloors resonating with the difficulties of transgendered sex
work, black market, hormones, drug & alcohol addiction, racism,
gender & sexual crises, unemployment and censorship.
The title song, the "Midtown 120 Blues" Intro and Blues we find in
Track 1&2 is "strictly rhythm" house music. It's a simple 4/4 beat
with piano loop which might be "the real" minimal house.
"Ball'r (madonna-free zone)", track #3, is a euphoric mid tempo
house track which reminds one of Larry Heard or Jan Jelinek. Number
4 on the menue "Brenda's $20 Dilemma" is a sequel of his fag jazz
style. For reference check the beautiful Kuniyuki remix of this
song on Mule Musiq 34.
"House Music Is Controllable Desire You Can Own", the next track of
"Midtown 120 Blues", is classic New York house style. If you like
the records or that kind of artist, you'll like this song for sure.
Sixth track "Sisters, I Don't Know What This World Is Coming To",
is one of the highlights of the album. Actually this track is 4/4
beat house but very emotional and powerfull music.
"Reverse Rotation" which comes in at #7, is a deep and madly
beautiful song. When you listen to this song, you associate the
music of Theo Parrish or Pepe Bradock.
Tracks #8 and 9 are the main songs of the album. "Grand Central,
Pt. 1 (Deep Into The Bowel Of House)" is filled with some kind of
sadness. If you read the story of the album in Terre's words you
will find out about the meaning behind those key tracks.
This album is for real house music lovers. It might not be the
perfect sound for the young dj only playing fashionable music, but
as the current house music scene seems to be flooded with too many
bad albums, Mule Musiq had no choice but to release this album now.
