▓████▓▌ name too. Cleverly, though, if borrowing from Adam ▓▌
▓████▓▌ "Mice Parade" Pierce's idea for a soubriquet, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ LoudBomb's assumed more than a name, he's actually ▓▌
▓████▓▌ taken on a wholly new persona, distorting and ▓▌
▓████▓▌ digitising his voice and brewing up a completely ▓▌
▓████▓▌ different kettle of hardcore to the one he's most ▓▌
▓████▓▌ associated with. Can you tell who it is yet...? ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ No need for us to spoil the surprise just yet, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ since 'Long Playing Grooves' is nothing if not ▓▌
▓████▓▌ remarkable enough in its own right. Scorching ▓▌
▓████▓▌ opener 'Theme (It's A Perfect Day)' is ▓▌
▓████▓▌ six-and-a-half minutes, nearly, of defiant ▓▌
▓████▓▌ electro-pulse heaven, taking its cues from much of ▓▌
▓████▓▌ the Pet Shop Boys' similarly uncompromising 1993 ▓▌
▓████▓▌ mini-masterpiece 'Relentless', and, if this album's ▓▌
▓████▓▌ adherence to that template can leave it a little ▓▌
▓████▓▌ too removed from the current cutting edge, then at ▓▌
▓████▓▌ least it's harking back to a gloriously fluid era ▓▌
▓████▓▌ in dance music. We haven't heard drums as shuffly ▓▌
▓████▓▌ and rolling as the ones in the early-Orbital-esque ▓▌
▓████▓▌ instrumental 'The Fall Collection' since, well, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ early Orbital, really, and there's a wonderfully ▓▌
▓████▓▌ wide-eyed early acid sensibility at play on the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ aesthetically and lyrically beautiful bliss-out of ▓▌
▓████▓▌ 'This Is The Way I Want It', to say nothing of the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ belting 303 bang of 'Devil v. Angel' (which forms ▓▌
▓████▓▌ part of an unlikely-sounding pseudo-spiritual ▓▌
▓████▓▌ triptych with dark d'n'b clang bonanza 'BB BuBois' ▓▌
▓████▓▌ and the flawedly baggy 'Heaven's On Fire'). Indeed, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ the wordsmithery here puts many of the records that ▓▌
▓████▓▌ must have influenced it to shame; there's a ▓▌
▓████▓▌ refreshing lack of obliqueness to the desires ▓▌
▓████▓▌ dictating 'Guys Like You' and 'Factory Builders ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Convention', and even a worryingly timely bit of ▓▌
▓████▓▌ politics on 'We Need The Truth'. Yikes! ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ It's no good, though - the packaging might not be ▓▌
▓████▓▌ too keen to unmask LoudBomb, but we're that chuffed ▓▌
▓████▓▌ with this return to form that we can barely help ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ourselves... it's Bob Mould! Of Husker Du! And ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Sugar! Yes, after losing it quite spectacularly on ▓▌
▓████▓▌ 'Modulate' last year, these LoudBomb shenanigans ▓▌
▓████▓▌ make for an explosive rebirth, and, if you've ever ▓▌
▓████▓▌ had any affection for both the technoscenti and the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ finest endeavours to ever spring from the US ▓▌
▓████▓▌ underground you're going to be just as delighted. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Mr M, 'Long Playing Grooves' really was a good ▓▌
