Release Notes:

Just like the famous and sadly-departed wrestler Big Daddy
(aka Shirley Crabtree) and despite sounding like a 1950`s
movie star, Shirley Lee is, in fact, a bloke. A very talented
bloke at that. I won`t deny that my spirits lifted when,
instead of the latest product of the Spiteri / Nash /
Winehouse / Duffy assembly line, what filled my ears was the
sound of a placid Luke Haines - perhaps actually cracking a
smile.

It was at this point I realised I`d heard these gentle tones
before in mid-late 90`s also-rans Spearmint - the members of
whom add flesh to the bones of Lee`s eponymous `solo` debut.
Like Spearmint`s back catalogue, much of `Shirley Lee` comes
across like The Lightning Seeds following a drop in both pitch
and testicles. `Dissolving Time` is upbeat, strewn with
harmonies and unanticipated synth gurgles, while `London Ghost
Stories` is a charming, almost easy listening instrumental
that would be equally happy soundtracking a wistful montage in
a `nice` film as it would being piped into the waiting room in
heaven. Later the cheerfulness of `The First Time You Saw
Snow` really does evoke the same warmth as such pioneering
life moments.

Best by far, however, is the lead single `The Smack of
Pavement in your Face`, a steam locomotive rolling along
rhythmically while Lee conjures a range of emotions through
some impressive wordplay. It cements the album together very
nicely and will have fans eagerly awaiting the return of
Spearmint later this year.
