Getting down for the thang of it, we present the best, the whole best, and
nothing but the best of the ultimate funkateers. Featuring ôOne Nation Under A
Grooveö, ô(not just) Knee Deepö, ôFreak Of The Weekö and many more, this
Funkadelic flammery fest will win your groove allegiance. You have been warned!

Ready or not, there they were. Resplendent in feathers, frocks and fun fur -- or
nothing but a nappy. Hair everywhere. A spaceship û a muthaship -- landing
behind them, with some alienà some thing, walking out in front, rubbing its nose
with its wrist as if smelling some cosmic reminder of life on the planet funk û
because it knew somehow, that funk originally meant stink.
And boy, these dudes stank the place out. They couldnÆt dress they way they
dressed, act the way they acted, say the unbelievable things they dared to say
if they didnÆt just reek of funk. They had it like nobody else had it. They made
you laugh and dance at the same time, and they never went D.I.S.C.O., oh no.
They stayed true to the excessive spirit they started out with, and if other
acts grabbed their share of the limelight, they didnÆt care: theyÆd be P-funkinÆ
just as sure as youÆre born long after the dilletantish David Booeys and Donna
Comers had moved onto some other thang.
Ready or not, here we are, delivering a funksome package of FunkadelicÆs finest,
drawn from the material they originally unleashed on Warners back in the late
1970s and early 1980s. This was the time when every album they did had an anthem
on it, from ôFreak Of The Weekö to ôUncle Jamö, ôElectro-cutiesö to ôOne Nation
Under A Grooveö. This is the Funkadelic era when the groove stepped up a notch
and the guitars stepped down a tad, sending their success level soaring.
Switch your brain to ôthinkö mode, your body to ôshagö, and your feet to ôdonÆt
fail me nowö. You are now ready. Enjoy your flight. YouÆll be on the planet
Funkadelic before you realise youÆve even left Earth.

1. FunkadelicÆs leader, George Clinton, began his career as a teenager in New
Jersey, founding doo-wop group, The Parliaments, in 1955. During the early
1960s, they moved to Detroit, then AmericaÆs happening black music city. In 1964
the group added a backing band, and in 1967, hit big with prototype psychedelic
soul single "(I Wanna) Testify".

2. After contractual difficulties with their label, Clinton, by now influenced
by Hendrix and hippie rock, concentrated on bringing the backing band out front.
The group, originally The Funkadelics, and, thankfully briefly, the
Parlafunakadlicmints, before settling on Funkadelic, played rock-driven funk and
funk-driven rock, with guitar galore from Eddie Hazel.

3. Funkadelic released of series of experimental acid-funk albums between 1970
and 1976, and in the meantime the stop-start career of Parliament kicked off
again -- effectively the same band. They had an outrageous stage show and as
other members joined -- bassplayer Bootsy Collins and keyboard maestro Bernie
Worrell among them -- the sprawling group became a massive stage extravaganza.

4. In 1975, Funkadelic joined Warner Brothers and released the album ôHardcore
Jolliesö. But it was their next set, 1978Æs ôOne Nation Under a Grooveö, that
really shot them from underground force to major label stars. Their 1979 ôUncle
Jam Wants Youö was arguably even better, and was another huge hit in the US.

5. Parliament-Funkadelic, now known as P-Funk, grew several other offshoot acts
in the 1970s û BootsyÆs Rubber Band, The Horny Horns, The Brides Of Funkenstein
and Parlet among them, with varying degrees of success. It was becoming an
empire, but then things started to get wobbly.

6. Original Parliaments members Fuzzy Haskins, Calvin Simon and Grady Thomas
quit, and in 1981 struck out with "Connections and Disconnectionsö under the
name of Funkadelic. Meanwhile, Geroge ClintonÆs mob hit back with the slightly
more electronic The Electric Spanking Of War Babiesö, which was a moderate
success.

7. Clinton was having trouble holding his empire together, so he cut back on his
road schedule and the inevitable hassles that went with it, released what was
effectively another P-Funk album, ôComputer Gamesö, under his own name, scoring
two hits, ôLoopzillaö and ôAtomic Dogö.

8. While the P-Funk organisation grew unfashionable in the, the next decade saw
a renaissance as rappers like Digital Underground, De La Soul and Ice Cube
plundered their beats for samples. The Parliament-Funkadelic circus took to the
road again, and recording dates aside, theyÆll be out there funkinÆ forever.
