- Release Notes ------------------------------------------------------------- -
Hailing from the Washington D.C. area, Monument brings to the table the
classic emo sound that you're used to hearing from bands like Cap'n Jazz
combined with a more complex, dancey feel. In their latest release, A 3 Song
7", Monument shows their musical growth, taking their catchy guitar riffs and
shouted vocals to the next level.
The first track, "Busy Being Bees," starts out simply but soon hits you with
a strong melody played on guitar, intensified by powerful slams on the drums
and cymbals. The repetition of the melody and harmony adds to the passion of
the energy of the song, which is also reflected in the singer's harmonic and
thoughtful vocals.
Next is "Memory and Location," an energetic track featuring vocals by all of
the band members and several changes in tempo, which gives each component of
the band a chance to shine. The song abruptly ends with around one minute to
go and features a contrastingly simple acoustic guitar solo, followed by some
"rad" banter between the band mates.
Monument certainly saved the best for last with the final track on the EP,
"It's Clear, Tension," which provides a strong impact and lasting impression
on the listener. This song combines the highlights from the two previous
songs while presenting its own catchiness and originality. The song switches
between fast moving, loud sections and simplistic soft sections, highlighted
by intricate melodies from a guitar. Towards the end of the song, the final
simplistic section builds up energy and finally erupts into an intense and,
dare I say, monumental collaboration between all of the instruments, making
for an epic ending to an EP whose potential built with each song.
I saw Monument perform twice last week and if you enjoy this 7" or any of
Monument's other releases, you will be blown away by their live performance.
No matter what kind of music you like or whether you think real emo is dead,
there's something for everyone to enjoy in Monument's latest endeavor.
